Mr. Sitan “Stan” Chen’s outstanding science project was recognized by AFCEA-Atlanta as the clear winner of a $750 scholarship award at the 2011 Georgia Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (JSHS). An additional award of $500 was given to Ms Rebecca Bingham, his Chemistry teacher at Northview High School, for her exemplary support to Stan during this project. Stan’s project title was “Cellular Automata to More Efficiently Compute the Collatz Map.” This is a pure mathematical/computational project with a promise to speed the rate at calculating local cellular automatons. The Collatz Conjecture was first posed in 1937. There is impressive array of monetary awards for resolving the conjecture in the math community. This type of work is instrumental in developing encryption methods used in commercial and military applications. Stan was selected as an alternate to attend the National JSHS held in San Diego later in 2011. Congratulations Stan! (The project abstract is available upon request.)

Michelle Brown particpated in the Chamblee High School Science and Engineering Fair in January of 2011. Here is some feedback we recieved earlier:
“I just wanted to send a huge thank you to all who were able to participate yesterday. It was our first time having all students participate in Science Fair and we would not have been able to pull it off without you. I hope that you had a pleasant experience and would consider being a judge next year.”

Rockdale County Schools Appreciative of AFCEA-ATL ISEF Participation
February 22nd, 2011
Michele Brown, Timothy Brown and Tony Cox had the opportunity to judge the 2011 Rockdale Regional Science and Engineering Fair in early February. RCPS has provided the chapter with some warm feedback.
“I wanted to let you know how appreciative we are of the support given to us by AFCEA. From grants (I have personally received two), to judges, to awards we have definitely benefited from AFCEA’s largesse. We held the first Rockdale Regional Science & Engineering Fair this past Friday. AFCEA provided three judges and two cash awards, one for middle and the other for high school. Needless to say, the recipients were thrilled to be selected. We were extremely grateful for the judging expertise in helping our students move on to the next level. The Science Fair is not just about choosing the best projects; the most important role of the Fair is to make students better researchers, presenters, and scientists regardless of their final placings at the Awards Ceremony. Be assured that these efforts are extremely important in encouraging students to continue in the research process as well as increasing the rigor and understanding of the work that they do. We sincerely want to make this Fair the best it can be.” - Jill Beach, Research Coordinator, February 21, 2011.
